A Chef Redefines Success

People are becoming more intentional with how they spend their money. As grocery prices rise and everyday expenses continue to climb, many are choosing experiences that feel personal and memorable.

That shift is part of what makes Duck Sel so unique.

Created by Michelin-starred chef Donald Young, Duck Sel is a bi-monthly pop-up dining experience hosted in secret locations across Chicago, inviting guests to experience Michelin-star level cuisine in the comfort and intimacy of a home setting. It is an experience that brings people closer not only to the food, but to the story behind it.

I had the opportunity to learn how Young stepped away from the traditional restaurant world to create something entirely his own.

At just 17 years old, Young already knew he wanted to build a future in restaurants. With the support of his father, who worked in the industry, he connected with a mentor at a five-star establishment and took a bold first step, asking to work in the kitchen of a five-star restaurant. He began by working one day a week, eager to learn, but quickly found himself overwhelmed by the intensity and demands of the environment. Balancing school and the long hours of kitchen life left him questioning whether he truly belonged in the industry.

For a moment, he stepped back and considered walking away from cooking altogether. But with encouragement from his parents, Young returned to the kitchen and discovered something deeper than pressure or exhaustion, a genuine passion for the craft.

As his career progressed, Young also found himself caught up in the restaurant party scene. After receiving two DUIs, he reached a turning point in his life. Instead of allowing those moments to define him, he made a decision to change direction. He committed himself fully to his work, showing up earlier, staying later, and dedicating himself to growth and discipline in the kitchen.

That commitment ultimately led him to become a Michelin-starred chef and a semifinalist for the James Beard Awards. Yet even at the height of success in the fine dining world, Young began to feel a pull toward something different, something more personal and more connected.

That realization became the foundation for Duck Sel.

Hosted in secret locations, Duck Sel offers guests more than a meal. It creates an atmosphere where fine dining feels approachable, warm, and deeply human. By removing the formality often associated with high-end restaurants, Young has created a space where food becomes an experience shared, not simply served.

In many ways, Duck Sel reflects Young’s own journey. It is a story of resilience, reflection, and reinvention, of recognizing when to shift direction and having the courage to build something new.

At its core, Young’s story is not just about success in the kitchen. It is about redefining success itself. It is about choosing purpose, growth, and ownership over comfort, and having the courage to build a life that feels like your own.
