Finding Comfort in The Moments That Matter

When I think about summer, I think about the moments that don't make the itinerary, the conversations around the dinner table, time with family and friends, and watching the sunset. Those simple moments often become the memories we carry with us.

In July’s Who’s With Whit feature in Fete Lifestyle Magazine, the idea of slowing down and being present was at the heart of my conversation with Christine Marzullo, founder of The Comfort Club, created through Together at Peace.

Christine created The Comfort Club after unexpectedly losing her father. She longed for a place to talk about him, share stories, laugh, cry, and be understood. She realized many others sought that same community.

The Comfort Club brings people together to honor loved ones through stories, signs, and remembrance. At monthly gatherings, members share experiences, encourage one another, and find reassurance they do not have to walk through grief alone.

Christine and I talked about how grief and joy can coexist. Our hearts are capable of holding both. We can miss someone deeply while still laughing, celebrating, and creating new memories.

For Christine, comfort isn't about forgetting the people we've lost. It's about carrying their love with us. Sometimes that comfort comes through prayer or another person. Other times, it comes through what Christine calls Memory Moments: unexpected reminders that love is still present.

It could be a favorite song at just the right time. A rainbow after a difficult day. A butterfly. A penny that appears when you need a little hope.

These moments can remind us that the people we love will always be part of our story.

Christine also shared simple ways families can stay connected to loved ones they've lost: cook their favorite meal, listen to their favorite music, look through old photographs, gather together, and tell their stories.

Sometimes we create these Memory Moments intentionally. Other times, they find us.

Summer gives us plenty of opportunities to create those memories with the people we love. Eat dinner outside. Watch the sunset. Play cards. Go for a walk. Take the boat out. Turn off your phones. Ask your parents or grandparents questions you've never asked before.

Take the pictures, but don't forget to be in them.

The goal isn't to create a perfect summer. The goal is to create Memory Moments.

When I think about my own life, I don't always remember the big milestones. I remember family vacations, funny inside jokes, walking on the beach, and watching the sunset over the lake. Those ordinary moments became priceless.

That's what stays with me most from my conversation with Christine: when we slow down, we notice more. We notice the people around us. We notice beauty. We notice gratitude. And we notice Mother Nature.

Christine hopes that when people leave The Comfort Club, they leave with hope, hope that healing is possible, hope that sharing their story can be part of the journey, and hope that it's okay to laugh again.

My conversation with Christine reminded me that grief doesn't have to be walked alone. Through community, shared experiences, and remembrance, we can continue to carry the love of those we've lost.

As you enjoy this summer, take the extra moment. Ask the question. Sit around the table. Watch the sunset. Be present.

You never know when an ordinary moment will become a lifelong memory.
